Invitation to a European Conference on
« Social sciences and humanities in Europe:
New challenges, new opportunities »

Brussels

12-13 December 2005

Dear Colleague,

With the Commission’s proposals for the 7th Framework Programme, social sciences and humanities will play a key role in European research, and contribute to Europe’s economic, cultural, social and political future in the world.

In this context the European Commission is organizing a conference on :

« Social sciences and humanities in Europe: New challenges, new Opportunities »

which will take place in Brussels on 12-13 December 2005 in the Paul Henri Spaak building of the European Parliament.

The conference is an important opportunity for the scientific and policy communities to discuss options for the future of Europe’s research in the social sciences and humanities, in particular in relation to the themes and instruments of the Commission’s proposals for the 7th Framework Programme.

At the same time the conference will be an opportunity for researchers and policy-makers from throughout Europe, but also from countries like the USA, Canada, China, Japan, Russia, Brazil, India and South Africa to explore opportunities for potential cooperation.

I am writing to invite you to take part in the conference and add your contribution to the discussion.
World-class researchers in the social sciences and the humanities as well as senior policy-makers will contribute their experience and ambitions for the future of social sciences and humanities. The agenda will also provide sufficient time for dialogue and discussion.

To encourage the participation of young scholars and research managers, the Commission may, in exceptional circumstances, provide support with travel expenses. More details can be found on the conference web-site.

The draft conference programme, registration, updates and other relevant announcements are available at the following website:
